A skin condition of the toes and fingers that occurs in people who have had Covid-19 is believed to be the result of the immune response to the virus. Scientists in the British Journal of Dermatology say this after studying fifty people who suffered from ‘coronatenes’ and chilblains.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been reports of people who have had the coronavirus developing red or purple damaged and swollen fingers and toes. Typically, the condition manifests several weeks after infection.

The researchers found that people with the skin condition had high numbers of autoantibodies, writes The Guardian. They target their own cells and tissues. The cells that line the blood vessels also play an important role in the development of coronatenes and chilblains.

In most people, the condition is harmless. Over time, the symptoms disappear on their own. Some people need ointment or another remedy to treat the coronatenes.
