New side effect identified with corona vaccine AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine can occasionally lead to leaks in capillaries, small veins. People who have suffered from this before should therefore not receive this vaccine. This has been established by the European regulator EMA.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has already investigated the possible side effect and now concludes that there is probably a connection. The side effect should therefore be stated on the package leaflet.

One case in the Netherlands

More than 78 million people in Europe have received the vaccine from AstraZeneca. Six of them suffered from the so-called systemic capillary leak syndrome. It happened mainly in women and within four days of vaccination. Three out of six people had previously suffered from the same complaints. One of those three has died.

One case of this leak syndrome is known in the Netherlands. It was about someone who had received the corona vaccine from Janssen. This was a man between 50 and 60 years old and he died from it. In the Netherlands, this side effect has not been reported in people who have received the vaccine from AstraZeneca. The EMA says nothing about Janssen’s corona vaccine.

When people have leaks in the small veins, blood plasma seeps out of the veins. It then ends up in muscles, organs or cavities. People can then suffer from swelling, especially in the arms and legs. Their blood pressure can drop, the blood can thicken a bit and they sometimes have less of the protein albumin in the blood. This substance regulates the pressure in the blood vessels.

Other side effects

The EMA is also investigating another potential side effect of the four corona vaccines now available. It concerns inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the pericardium (pericarditis). But it is not yet certain whether the corona vaccines were also the cause. Just because it happened after vaccination doesn’t automatically mean it happened because of the vaccination.

There are now 24 known cases in the Netherlands in which people developed inflammation of the heart after vaccination, reports side effects center Lareb. In slightly more than half of the cases, this happened after a shot with the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech.
