New school building is the heart of the future Löwitz quarter · Leipziger Zeitung

After two and a half years of construction, the new five-stream high school at Annemarie-Renger-Straße 19 in Leipzig’s central Löwitz district is completed in time for the 2024/2025 school year. Mayor Burkhard Jung, school mayor Vicki Felthaus and building mayor Thomas Dienberg symbolically handed over the key to the school community on Friday, August 23. The construction of the high school, previously known as the “Hauptbahnhof Westseite School”, is a first.

For the first time, the city of Leipzig has had a new school built as an investor model. The investor Otto Wulff Schulbau Leipzig GmbH has handed over a completely turnkey high school including land to the city for around 76 million euros.

“Leipzig has grown rapidly in recent years. If you grow quickly, you also have to create school places quickly,” said Mayor Burkhard Jung at the inauguration. “I am very pleased that we were able to create space for around 1,300 pupils at the high school in such a short construction period and that our investor model was successful. The school area is the heart of the new Löwitz quarter that we are developing at the main train station.”

The new school

The comprehensive spatial program for the high school was implemented in a four-story compact new building, including a partial basement as a bicycle and underground garage. The roofs are designed both as green retention areas and for photovoltaic systems.

The new school building also includes a three-court sports hall suitable for competitions and outdoor sports facilities. Both are available to clubs after school. The outdoor sports facilities also enrich the leisure activities offered by the planned public park next door on the Parthe and are available to the public during school holidays.

Stefan Wulff, Managing Partner of Otto Wulff, said of the completion: “The school is the first building block and thus the initial spark for life in the district. In realizing this project, we are meeting the increasing demand for school places for the first time in the form of the public-private investor model. Many thanks to Mayor Jung and all those involved in the project for their trust in this path.”

The successful development of the Löwitz Quarter is also progressing in the area surrounding the school, according to the city. The construction of a mixed-use quarter with rental and owner-occupied apartments, a hotel, offices, restaurants and retail outlets is planned on eleven building plots. The central location and diverse mix of users make the quarter a lively location for living, working and leisure.
