New S-Bahn to provide better connections to the Eifel

Commuters between Cologne and the Eifel region can look forward to a better S-Bahn service in the future. A new S-Bahn line 15 is planned.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) and go.Rheinland have presented their plans for the expansion of the S-Bahn line between Hürth-Kalscheuren and Kall. The aim is to better connect the region to the Cologne S-Bahn network and thus make local transport more attractive.

The new S-Bahn line 15 will run every 20 minutes in the future, thus connecting the Eifel region even better with the Cologne hub.

One of the most important measures is the construction of a new S-Bahn stop in the Hürth district of Fischenich, which will offer a direct transfer option to the city rail line 18. For this purpose, the railway line will be relocated over a length of around one kilometer. In addition, several bridges are planned south of the Hürth-Kalscheuren station in order to untangle traffic and reduce waiting times.

The expansion will take place in several steps: first, the existing infrastructure will be expanded and modernized, while the electrification of the route will be pushed forward in parallel. The projects are currently in an early planning stage.

The section between Hürth-Kalscheuren and Kall has been open to traffic again since June 2022 after it was badly damaged following the floods in 2021.
