New Rumors PlayStations Game Pass Counterpart Project Spartacus

The usually very reliable journalist / rumor mill incarnate Jeff Grubbs has once again picked up something interesting and shares in his latest podcast everything he knows about the alleged subscription service for PlayStation, now known only under the working title ‘Spartacus’. As you may know, this is supposed to be the PlayStation version of the ‘Netflix for games’-esque service called Xbox Game Pass. For example, Grubbs believes that the service is ‘pretty close’ to a launch and that something is about to happen at the end of this month. They may then hit an important internal milestone, not necessarily something public.

Even more interesting is that Grubbs thinks he has a good impression of the different subscriptions or ‘tiers’ that you can choose from, including the price per month. Grubbs knows nothing about possible prices for an annual subscription.

As has been mentioned for some time, Spartacus, like Xbox Game Pass, will offer three different tiers, namely:

  • Essential ($10 per month): exactly the same as what PlayStation Plus now offers, with free games every month and online access.
  • Extra ($13 per month): access to a catalog of 250-300 games, similar to the downloadable portion of PlayStation Now now.
  • Premium ($16 per month): everything from the above tiers, plus cloud streaming, classic games and game trials.

Grubb doesn’t know exactly what those ‘classic games’ mean, but it would be a very important part of the deal. With ‘game trials’ you should think of temporarily being able to try out (at least) all major PlayStation first-party titles. And therefore no full games at launch, as is the case with Xbox Game Pass.

The latter may not make it that interesting for the Watch itself, but that depends entirely on which classic games will be included. What you?
