In the lottery, the rules change after this drawing: Until now, the jackpot was always guaranteed to be paid out if there was no direct hit in prize class 1 after twelve draws. From now on there is a maximum of 45 million euros that must be in the jackpot before the money is paid out. This was announced by Jürgen Häfner, Managing Director of Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz, on Tuesday in Koblenz.
Jackpot is 28 million euros
In the drawing last Saturday (August 15, 2020) not a single participant in Germany managed to correctly guess the six winning numbers including the super number. The jackpot increased to 28 million euros.
Since 2009 the rule has been that the jackpot must be emptied in the 13th drawing. Jürgen Häfner speaks of a historic lottery draw with a view to Wednesday. With the adaptation, the wishes of the customer are taken into account.
“The theoretical winning odds will increase in all profit categories and even with a simple six without a super number, significantly more million-dollar wins will be possible,” said Häfner. However, the stake will be increased to 1.20 euros per box from 23 September.
If you submit a ticket for the drawing on Wednesday, you can look forward to different scenarios.
- If there are one or more winners in the 1st prize class (six correct numbers plus super number), the amount will be paid out regularly.
- If nobody wins in the 1st prize class, the jackpot is assigned to the 2nd prize class (six correct ones) and distributed there.
- If no one is lucky in this category either, the next level is awarded (five correct numbers plus super number).
- Theoretically, it is also possible that the winners of class 8 (three correct numbers) share the prize among themselves. But that is considered unlikely.
In the past, the jackpot has only been guaranteed to be paid out five times:
- On May 14, 2016, a player from North Rhine-Westphalia won the jackpot of over 37 million euros with prize category 2.
- Another guaranteed payout followed on September 14, 2016 – again a lottery player from NRW won around 33 million euros in prize class 2.
- On January 23, 2019, three tipsters from Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia shared the jackpot with prize class 2 and each won 10.7 million euros.
- The fourth guaranteed payout went to North Rhine-Westphalia on June 29, 2019: six correct numbers without a super number were enough for a player for around 31 million euros.
- The last guarantee distribution to date was on June 3, 2020: A player from Thuringia won around 32 million euros with the six correct numbers.
