New robot breaks high jump record – Computer Sweden

A group of researchers at Hawkes Lab at UC Santa Barbara in the United States have developed a 30 centimeter high robot that may well be the best high jumper in the world.

The robot must be able to jump 32.9 meters straight into the air, three times more than the previous world record for a jumping robot.

To succeed in this, the robot uses a small motor that pulls a rope into ethylene plastic and pulls together springs made of advanced hybrid materials. After that, a lightweight locking mechanism releases so that the robot is sent up into the air like an aerodynamic arrow.

According to the researchers themselves, the robot can be close to the mathematical limit for the jumping height of a robot built with available materials.

The idea is that jumping can be an effective method of moving robots in environments where, for example, it is not possible to fly. Such as on the moon or asteroids where there is no atmosphere.

You can see the robot demonstrated in the clip below.
