New road. Prague wants to create a study at the Freight Station

The Prague City Hall wants to have an urban study of a new road prepared, which should connect the district planned in the area of the Žižkov Freight Station to Českobrodská Street. The study will be decided by councilors on Monday, and should be taken over by the city’s Institute of Planning and Development (IPR).

The long-considered Jarovská třída is intended to relieve the already congested Jana Želivského street. The city is also preparing a change in the zoning plan for the future development of the former railway station.

According to the document, the new road should lead from Jarov to the intersection of Malešická and Na Jarově streets and then along the existing railway line through the freight station complex. The urban study should accurately design the route together with the planned reconstruction of Malešická Street. There are also plans to extend the tram line from the station towards Jarov.

According to the municipality, all planned constructions need to be coordinated, and the completion of the Municipal Ring Road, which will lead through Jarov and Malešice, must also be taken into account. With regard to the freight station itself, the city is now finalizing a change to the zoning plan, which must be approved before construction can begin on the site. According to the background study, which was created for the change, the area can accommodate up to 15,000 new inhabitants.

The area around the former freight station is about 33 hectares. The fate of the First Republic’s functionalist station building, which ceased to function in 2002, has been resolved for years. It was originally supposed to give way to construction, but after the pressure of activists, it was demolished. The previous management of Prague approved the purchase of real estate from ČD for 662 million crowns, estimates of reconstruction costs are estimated at between 1.5 and 2.5 billion crowns. The current management of the municipality wants to agree with private individuals or the Ministry of Culture on joint use so that the city does not have to pay for the reconstruction itself. Central Group and Penta Investment, for example, plan to build on the site.
