New Revelations in Microsoft’s Dispute with the FTC: Exclusive PC and Xbox Game, Ninja Theory Acquisition, Bethesda Confusion, and Bungie’s Upcoming IP

The proceedings in the dispute between the FTC and Microsoft brought other interesting revelations and findings. Let’s start with a new title from IO Interactive. The fantasy RPG dubbed Project Dragon/Project Fantasy will apparently be exclusive to PC and Xbox, according to Microsoft documents. Xbox Game Studios also acts as a publisher for the game. More details about this project can be found in our archive. The upcoming James Bond from the authors of Hitman, on the other hand, should be a multi-platform title.

Another interesting piece of news concerns the British studio Ninja Theory, which has belonged to Microsoft since 2018. But when he bought it, it was not clear how much he paid for the team. Now it has become clear that Microsoft spent 117 million dollars for the authors of Hellblade. At the same time, Microsoft was also acquiring other studios. After all, in a newly revealed email from 2019, the head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, wrote to his colleague Tim Stuart that they have a unique opportunity to burn Sony’s pond with the upcoming acquisitions. We already wrote more about the possible plans for the purchase of studios by Microsoft in the morning article.

Other internal communication is also worth paying attention to. An email from Bethesda marketing chief Pete Hines revealed that Bethesda was confused by Microsoft’s willingness to keep Call of Duty on the PlayStation when it was the opposite of what The Elder Scrolls writers should have been asked to do. The Mail is from last year and it suggests that Bethesda is worried about being pressured why its games unlike Call of Duty have some form of exclusivity. Hines literally writes that he is confused by this and that he does not understand what the difference is. It’s also interesting that he mentions The Elder Scrolls VI exclusivity, although a few days ago the hearing in this dispute again said that the platforms have not yet been decided. If I had to guess, I would see it as a time exclusivity, after which the game could be released on PlayStation as a continuation of the established series. On the other hand, I think the new IP from ZeniMax will only be aimed at PC and Xbox, like Starfield or Redfall.

The leaked materials also revealed that Microsoft expects to release a new IP from Bungie known as Matter in 2025. The creators of Destiny also recently announced the comeback of the Marathon brand in the form of an extraction event. Even on Xbox, however, they apparently believe that Matter will be the next really big thing from Bungie.
