The gunman who tried to assassinate former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump in July planned his attack carefully and studied his timeline of events long before the attack.
This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, citing FBI officials.
20-year-old Thomas Crooks searched more than 60 times for information about the Republican presidential candidate and his then-rival, Democratic President Joe Biden, before registering for a Trump rally in early July.
“We saw extensive, detailed planning for the attack, which means he looked at any number of events or targets,” Kevin Rojack, the FBI’s top official in western Pennsylvania, said during a telephone briefing with reporters.
Rojack said the FBI has not yet been able to determine exactly what motivated Crooks to try to kill Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.
Crooks’ activity shows that he is interested in several ideologies, but does not strongly indicate that he is motivated by a particular left-wing or right-wing perspective, Rojack said.
FBI officials have found no evidence that Crooks worked with other people or was directed by an outside force.
There are no traces of illegal drugs or alcohol in his system.
We recall that the US Secret Service suspended at least five employees as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
One official from the team directly responsible for Trump’s security and four members of the Secret Service’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office, including the office chief, have been removed. It was in this state that the assassination attempt against Trump took place.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Office, declined to comment on the reported removals, but said “we are investigating the processes, procedures and factors that led to this operational failure.”
On July 13, during a pre-election rally against Trump was assassinated. He was slightly injured, and one of the participants in the event was killed. The Secret Service informed that the shooter was killed.
As a result, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said she would resign. She admitted that her unit had failed to effectively secure Trump.
