Chen Kugel, chief pathologist at the Israel National Center, told CNN that the finger was cut off and sent for DNA testing to confirm its identity. Kugel said that the Israeli authorities tried to identify the body by matching photos with old records of Sinwar’s teeth, but this was not enough for a proper identification, which required a DNA test. Sinwar’s body arrived at the Forensic Medicine Center in Tel Aviv on Thursday evening, where a full DNA analysis was carried out, which confirmed his identity with 100% certainty.
Yahya Al-Sinwar, who spent more than twenty years in Israeli prisons before being released in a prisoner exchange deal in 2011, was one of the most prominent Hamas leaders in Gaza and one of the masterminds of the operation the army against Israel. The attack targeting him is believed to be part of a series of intensive operations launched by Israel against Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders in Gaza, following their recent escalation following a widespread offensive Israel on the Gaza Strip.
