Berglandmilch invested eight million euros in the switch to a sustainable filling and washing system in Aschbach. From here, the central stores of the trading partners are supplied with milk in one-liter returnable bottles. The reusable glass bottles can be refilled 15 times, the production of the previous disposable glass bottles is discontinued.
Reusable bottles are the “most environmentally friendly solution”
The environmental protection organization Greenpeace provided Berglandmilch with their know-how. She described reusable bottles when presenting the project as the most environmentally friendly solution to reduce packaging waste for beverages. The deposit per bottle of milk is 22 cents and can be returned in the return machines in the supermarket across Austria.
Aschbach is one of ten Berglandmilch locations. In the company’s centrally located and largest production facility, ten additional jobs were created with the switch to the new bottles. Further reusable products are planned in 2020, such as a half-liter reusable bottle and light milk in the reusable bottle.
In 2018, Berglandmilch initially switched to single-use glass bottles. In the interests of sustainability, a decision was made just one year later to bottle milk in returnable bottles made from Austrian glass. The Berglandmilch dairy is owned by 11,000 dairy farmers.
