New Research Shows Tai Chi Can Improve Motor Function and Quality of Life in Parkinson’s Patients

The latest research conducted by Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine found that Tai Chi can improve the motor function, balance ability and quality of life of Parkinson’s patients.

The study recruited a group of Parkinson’s disease patients, some of whom received Tai Chi training and others who did no exercise. The results of the study showed that patients who received Tai Chi training performed better in terms of motor function, and their walking ability and balance were improved. In contrast, patients who did not exercise experienced a faster decline in motor function.

In addition to improvements in motor function, Tai Chi also has a positive impact on non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s patients. Studies have found that patients who receive Tai Chi training report a higher quality of life and their sleep quality also improves. In addition, their memory and thinking abilities have also been improved.

Although the results of this study are encouraging, it is important to note that the study has some limitations. First, the study groups were not randomly assigned, which may cause bias. Furthermore, the scope of the study was relatively small. Therefore, further studies are needed to validate these results.

Nonetheless, Tai Chi is a low-intensity form of exercise that is low-risk and easy to learn. It can be used as a complement to a Parkinson’s disease treatment plan to help improve patients’ motor function, balance and quality of life. However, before starting Tai Chi, patients should seek medical advice and train under professional guidance.
