Everyone knows the cliché of the ‘crazy’ cat lady. But new research shows there may be a link between owning a cat and developing mental illness.
In a new study, Australian researchers looked at 17 previous studies of schizophrenia in people with and without a cat. And the conclusion is clear:
“We found an association between cat ownership and an increased risk of schizophrenia-related disorders,” write psychiatrist John McGrath and his colleagues from the Queensland Center for Mental Health Research.
‘After correction for measurement uncertainty, it turned out that people who are in close contact with cats have approximately twice the risk of schizophrenia,’ the team writes.
