New Research Reveals Cause of Extreme Pregnancy Sickness and Offers Hope for Better Treatment

About 80 percent of women experience nausea and vomiting at some point in their pregnancy. About 2 percent experience an extreme form of morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarum. The vomiting and nausea are then so bad that they lead to dehydration. An admission to hospital is then necessary. Kate, the wife of British Crown Prince William, among others, suffered from this extreme form of morning sickness during her pregnancies.

Until now, it was not entirely clear what causes pregnancy sickness. Scientists suspected that a certain hormone, GDF15, played a role in this. New international research now sheds more light on the exact role that hormone plays, and why some pregnant women experience extreme nausea. That insight can help to better help women in the future.
