However, the team noted that the study was conducted under controlled conditions, which can increase the viral survival time. Increasing the temperature decreases the virus’s ability to survive. At 40 degrees Celsius, SARS-CoV-2 could no longer last 48 hours. Conversely, in cooler temperatures, the virus may have a better chance of surviving.
“This research could also help explain the persistence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 in cool environments with high fat or protein contamination, such as meat processing facilities,“explained Trevor Drew, director of ACDP, who conducted the research, as quoted from Cnet.com. Australian researchers have seen several examples of the COVID-19 outbreak in meat packaging facilities.
