Brasilia. The annual report “Violence against the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil” by the Indigenist Mission Council (Cimi) shows an enormous deterioration in the conditions in the indigenous regions this year as well.
In the current report, the figures for 2020 were compared with those of previous years. The data itself is primarily provided by the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, APIB).
The report first addresses the issue of violence against property. Overall, there were 1,191 cases of violence against indigenous peoples’ property in 2020, including primarily conflicts over territorial rights (96 cases), inaction and delay in land regulation (832 cases) and illegal exploitation and invasion, as well as property damage (263 Cases).
Violence against people is also discussed. The report shows that there were a total of 304 documented cases of physical violence against indigenous peoples. Including death threats (17 cases), manslaughter (16 cases) as well as physical injuries, racism and ethnic and cultural discrimination. Five cases of sexual violence were also counted. Compared to 2019, the number of murdered indigenous people rose by 61 percent to a total of 182 people affected.

In addition, 110 indigenous people committed suicide and 776 children died between the ages of zero and five.
A total of 201 areas, 145 indigenous groups in 19 Brazilian states are affected by various forms of violence. Above all, there is the intrusion of illegal miners and loggers into the indigenous areas. In the region of the Yanomami indigenous people in northern Brazil alone, it is estimated that around 20,000 illegal workers are present. The indigenous groups regularly accuse the violence against them and their areas. Most recently, two indigenous children died after being pulled underwater by a machine and drowned.
The situation worsened due to the corona pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 43,000 indigenous people have been infected with the virus, and 900 have already died as a result of the disease. A particular problem, however, is that many indigenous groups only came into contact with the virus through the presence of illegal workers.
A summary of the report has been published in Spanish, Italian, French, English and German. The Caci website also offers the opportunity to find out more information about the various acts of violence against indigenous peoples and also classifies them geographically.
