Superstar Lionel Messi has been the player with the most competitive games for FC Barcelona since Sunday evening. The league game at Real Sociedad is the Argentine’s 768th game for the Catalans.
Messi has now overtaken club legend Xavi in this category, who played for Barca in 767 competitive games. The former world-class midfielder played for Barcelona’s first team from 1998 to 2015 and is currently coach in Qatar at Al-Sadd SC.
Messi once moved from his home in Argentina to Barca’s offspring when he was 13. In the now 768 competitive games for Blaugrana, the 33-year-old scored 661 goals.
Meanwhile, it is uncertain whether Messi will continue to play in Barcelona beyond the summer. The six-time world footballer’s contract expires at the end of June and he could move on for a free transfer.
