Almost 250,000 cases within 24 hours – California orders more body bags
The number of infections with the coronavirus in the USA has reached a new record high. As the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore announced on Tuesday evening (local time), more than 248,000 new cases of infection were recorded within 24 hours – the highest number in the country since the pandemic began. The total number of cases of infection in the USA rose to 16.7 million.
According to the university, 2,706 new corona deaths were counted within one day. The total death toll in the country rose to around 303,400.
The United States is by far the hardest hit country in the world by the pandemic in absolute terms. The US has been facing a dramatic new wave of spread of the virus for a month now. The threshold of 200,000 recorded new infections was exceeded on ten of the previous 13 days.
The west coast state of California is one of the worst affected US regions. In the metropolis of Los Angeles there were only around a hundred beds available in the intensive care units on Tuesday. The California authorities ordered thousands of additional body bags. In the state, an average of 163 new corona deaths were counted every day in the past week. A month ago that number was 41.
The vaccination campaign with the anti-corona vaccine developed by the Mainz company Biontech and the US company Pfizer started on Monday in the USA. First of all, health workers and residents of old people’s and nursing homes are vaccinated.
