New York City welcomed some 65.2 million tourists in 2018, a new record for the American metropolis, particularly popular with the British, Chinese, Canadians, Brazilians and French, the New York tourism organization said on Wednesday.
According to new figures released by the NYC & Company, approximately 51.6 million Americans and 13.5 million foreigners visited the “Big Apple“last year (compared to 13.1 million foreigners in 2017).
The British led foreigners in Donald Trump’s hometown, with some 1.24 million visitors, followed by Chinese (1.1 million), Canadiens (1 million), the Brazilians (920,000) and French (807.000).
New York comes 6th in the ranking of the most visited cities in the world by foreign tourists, according to the annual Global Destination Cities ranking of the company Mastercard published in September 2018, on the basis of projections which estimated at 13.1 million the number of foreign tourists in New York, slightly below the figures announced Wednesday.
Bangkok topped this ranking, ahead of London, Paris, Dubai and Singapore, in a context of growing international travel.
The American financial capital, whose tourism sector employs some 391,000 people, hopes to break a new record in 2019, with 67 million visitors expected, in particular thanks to the major festivities planned for June around the Gay Pride, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, emblematic of the struggle for gay rights.
