Last year, Czech Television launched a series that promised an amazing spectacle. The great Czech actors Ivan Trojan and Tereza Ramba were supposed to play the main roles of those who solve criminal cases. That was just a safe bet. And the rest of the staff of the series was literally stellar. At the time, no one probably thought that the series would struggle with a creative gap and replay of the main characters.
Ivan Trojan played a professor associated with university education and he certainly did not lack knowledge, but in all three episodes he behaved like a loud high school student who ruined everything he did. His behavior has put investigators in a difficult position more than once. But this was the first obstacle. The docant’s behavior may have seemed unbelievable, perhaps even unrealistic, to the viewer. The series was quickly losing credibility.
Tereza Ramba portrayed the young and troubled policewoman Fousová, who behaves like a small child, screams all the time and doesn’t even want to hear about working with the associate professor. Her behavior was far from rational, and even she was only causing problems for the department. Even the other great Ramba could not do anything with the script and had to play what was expected of her. But she played so much within the role that her character was even more believable than the character of the docent.
The always grumpy police chief, played by Ondřej Vetchý, was after the docent from the very beginning, often insulting him in front of others and yelling at him. But again, these were arguments built on a completely false basis, and the viewers could be deterred by these constant opinions from watching the series.
Colleagues of the main characters were portrayed by Marek Taclík and Matěj Hádek. They were supposed to be elite police officers. They were supposed to be directly opposite the associate professor and Fousová, that is, those who always solve everything and under every situation. But they had an even more unprofessional attitude than the investigation team which included a troubled policeman and a doctor.
When Czech Television reruns the three episodes of the first season, it will broadcast a sequel starting in September, which will again consist of three parts. The main characters do not change. The story should once again revolve around the pair of associate professor and Fousová, who will be brought together again by the research. But does such a story have anything else to offer?
The Trojan associate professor has already passed the recognition, so now everyone has to deal with him as a distinguished investigator, and Fousová, who works at the police presidium, wise too. Given the character traits that defined the first series, the second series could be one big bore.
If the screenwriters have come up with something that will surprise us and erase the mistakes from the first series, the September program of Czech Television will show it.
