“For more than twenty years, the Riga Opera Festival has become a valuable tradition, which is expected by both Latvian culture lovers and foreign guests,” the festival organizers said. Founded in 1998, the festival closes the Latvian National Opera season every summer with the brightest events of the past musical year.
This year, the program of the Riga Opera Festival will feature Giuseppe Verdi’s operas “Simon Bokanegra” (June 16 and 19) and “Aida” (June 9), Joaquino Rossini’s opera “Cinderella” (June 11), Jānis Kalniņš’s opera “Hamlet” (June 18) and Wolfgang Amadeus’ opera Don Juan (June 15-21). In addition to the conductors of the Latvian National Opera, the musical direction of several performances at the festival will be entrusted to the guest conductors. Pierre Giorgio Morandi will conduct the opera “Aida”, performances of the opera “Don Juan” under the direction of Alessandro De Marki, and Francesco Angelico will conduct the opera “Simon Bokanegra”.
This year, for the first time, the program of the Riga Opera Festival will be supplemented by new ballet productions – Peter Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” (June 10), choreographer Krzysztof Pastor’s ballet with Voiceha Killar “Dracula” (June 8) Debut music for “Nizhny Novgorod” (June 12).
The festival and season will end with a concert, this time both at the Latvian National Opera on June 30 and for the first time at the Jelgava Concert Hall “Mītava” on July 1. The concert will feature Italian and French opera music by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Charles Guno, Jacques Offenbach and Georges Bizet’s opera arias. The concert program created by the musical director and conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš will be interpreted by guest artists – winner of many competitions, participant of the Teatro alla Scala academy, tenor Azers Zada from Azerbaijan, soloist of the Ukrainian National Opera, soprano Olha Matushenko, Latvian Mongolian bass . They will be joined by the outstanding Latvian bass baritone Egils Siliņš and soloists of the Latvian National Opera Jūlija Vasiljeva and Mihails Čuļpajevs, as well as the orchestra of the Latvian National Opera.
