New pricing of electrical energy: the measure does not concern households, assures the CEO of SONABEL

The Director General of the National Electricity Company (SONABEL), Souleymane Ouédraogo hosted a press conference on September 13, 2023 in Ouagadougou to “give more detailed information” on the new pricing of electrical energy in Burkina Faso.

According to him, this measure does not lead to an increase in prices for households or for industries. “SONABEL’s pricing structure does not differentiate between customers. Which means that the State subsidy benefits all customers. Given that the subsidy has a social role, the idea is to carry out a reflection to determine categories of customers for whom this subsidy is not necessary,” he explained.

It is only, he added, for this category of customers that prices have been proposed which do not take the subsidy into account. These clients are banks and other financial institutions, insurance companies, telecommunications companies, international institutions, diplomatic enclaves and tobacco industries.

It is therefore to these categories of customers that a rate which is not subsidized will simply be applied.
