New prepaid bank cards for vulnerable individuals and families: Cáritas Española and Fiare Banca Ética join forces

Cáritas Española and Fiare Banca Ética come together to offer a new system of prepaid bank cards so that participants from the various diocesan Cáritas in the country can buy food, clothing and basic necessities “in a simple and discreet way”. This model represents a commitment to a support model that ensures dignity and personal autonomy when accessing these rights.

At present, more than 600 cards have been issued within this agreement and there are numerous diocesan Caritas (such as Santander, Bilbao, Tortosa or Valladolid) that have been using this instrument in their models of support for vulnerable individuals and families, with the aim of in order to guarantee their access to basic goods in a dignified manner, as is the case of applicants for food aid in the different diocesan territories.

This collaboration with Fiare Banca Ética will make it possible in the short term for the progressive incorporation of new Caritas into this modality of response to highly precarious situations, which is inspired by the dignity of aid and respect for the autonomy of the participants.

It is a prepaid card that will allow the people served to buy independently in food stores through the financial aid they receive and will be delivered to the families that are valued from the Reception resources of each Cáritas. The amount assigned will depend in each case on the need and the number of members of the family unit.

With this new project we want to protect the absolute anonymity of the person who, due to their current situation, goes to the entity and allows families access to perishable and fresh products, as well as personal and household hygiene items.

This modality avoids stigmatization and enhances the participation and inclusion of the beneficiaries, by being able to autonomously choose a variety of foods in local establishments and not having to go to charity food distribution centers.

“It is about responding to these new times with new formulas that allow basic needs to be covered from a commitment to the dignity of people and aid, in addition to strengthening local commerce,” they explain from Cáritas.

Adding efforts to facilitate access to ethical financial services for vulnerable people

Fiare Banca Ética and Cáritas Española signed an agreement at the beginning of the year aimed at facilitating access to Fiare Banca Ética’s financial products and services, which is serving to strengthen the relationship between both entities and advance in the defense of common values, such as financial inclusion, cooperation and solidarity, in which they have been working together for years.

The commitment to ethical finance and the solidarity economy of Cáritas

As the general secretary of Cáritas Española, Natalia Peiro, pointed out in the act of signing the agreement, “this collaboration with Fiare Banca Ética stems from our commitment to a model of financial institutions in which values such as respect for human rights and the care of creation mark their investments”. “Cáritas has spent years defending a financial management model committed to building a fairer world in which people are prioritized over economic benefit and this agreement will reinforce that objective,” she added.

The commitment of Cáritas to the Solidarity Economy, to which 57,095,035 euros were allocated last year, shows that there is another way of doing economy and doing business, and that an economy at the service of people is possible where you are be the priority above economic benefit.
