Newly appointed General Benjamin Acorda Jr. of the Philippine National Police has promised to aggressively purge the force of corruption, particularly among those involved in drug offenses. However, he maintained that there are more honest cops than corrupt ones within the 228,000-strong organization. His background as a former counterintelligence chief puts him in a unique position to tackle internal problems within the force. With only eight more months until his retirement, he will inherit the ongoing controversy over the alleged cover-up by PNP officials involved in a drug raid in Manila last year. Two investigations are being conducted into the matter, and Acorda is expected to bring the loose ends to a close before he retires.
