Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland have discovered plasma protein biomarkers that can identify adolescents at risk of developing mental health problems, paving the way for advances in early detection and prevention.
The study, whose findings were published in SciTech Daily, showed nearly 58 proteins significantly associated with mental health risks. Using a new algorithm to create predictive models, scientists have discovered biomarkers that can identify adolescents who may be at risk of developing mental health disorders.
Teenagers struggle with mental health
According to researchers, an estimated 10-20% of adolescents experience mental health challenges, most of which go undiagnosed or untreated. There is an urgent need for new methods of early detection. These innovative indicators can change the way mental health issues are identified and prevented in young people in the future.
The researchers used the results of the self-reported strengths and difficulties questionnaire to assess mental health risks in participants between the ages of 11 and 16, and analyzes of blood samples showed that 58 proteins were significantly associated with the SDQ score.
Bioinformatic analyzes were used to identify biological processes and pathways associated with selected plasma protein biomarker candidates. The major pathways related to these proteins included immune responses, blood clotting, and neurogenesis and degeneration.
changes in plasma protein
According to the results of the study, changes in plasma proteins have previously been associated with various mental health disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, and bipolar disorders, and also revealed that certain changes in plasma protein can indicate a high risk of mental dysfunction in adolescents.
According to the researchers, this pilot study will be followed by more specific investigations of potential biomarkers to identify individuals at risk of developing mental health problems, opening a new avenue of advancement in adolescent mental health care.
