Less than half a year separates us from the return of what many consider to be the best “Star Wars” series ever. We can now look forward to an important reunion.
Before “Andor” started, people were saying: “Who needs this series? Nobody cares about that. Disney really turns everything into content” or something similar. However, it didn’t take long until the opinion changed completely to the opposite. Due to the skilful examination of the Galactic Empire as a fascist system, “Andor” hit a nerve and also impressed with a complex characterization and a level of dialogue that is rarely found in the galaxy far, far away.
No wonder that many fans are waiting for the start of „Andor“ Staffel 2 look forward to what will also be the last. And since the series is a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” those responsible didn’t miss a beat and brought back another star of the film for the final episodes: We’re talking about Ben Mendelsohn, who in “Rogue One” embodied the Empire villain Orson Krennic. Empire magazine has now given us the first official look at Krennic in “Andor”:
So far, so normal. The strange thing is that Ben Mendelsohn personally claimed that Krennic would not return in “Andor”. Consequently, he was missing from the first preview of the new season:
Ben Mendelsohn lied to “Star Wars” fans
In conversation with the Italian magazine Bad Taste (via Comicbook.com), Mendelsohn had said the following in February 2024 regarding Krennic’s return:
“As far as Lucasfilm approaching me for a new project, I can say: No, I have not been approached for anything like that. And yes, it would be great to see him somewhere again at some point, but right now it’s all over here.”
Mind you, filming for Season 2 of “Andor” ended shortly before (via Collider). Ben Mendelsohn would almost certainly have already known during the interview that he was returning, as his role will probably not be limited to a cameo (more on that in a moment). It can be assumed that the Krennic actor deliberately lied to the “Star Wars” fans in order to keep the secret of his return, which is of course a legitimate means. However, it seems strange that the reunion has already been officially revealed instead of keeping the fans, who were unaware of the rumor at the time or who fell for Mendelsohn’s lie, still in the dark.
The fans are still guaranteed to be happy to see Krennic again and not just because of Ben Mendelsohn’s skillful performance. Empire Magazine finally reveals that the villain acts as an antagonist for Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), who is on the run, and also within his own ranks. This is how Empire supervisor Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) has to deal with Krennic, as the two apparently have different views on how to deal with the flaring rebellion. Mendelsohn spoke of an “imbalance” between them because he was higher in the ranking. We can be excited to see how much his return will shake up the “Star Wars” series. We’ll find out more from now on 22. April 2025when season 2 of “Andor” starts on Disney+.
