“With Mouse on the River” by Alice Melvin

In the picture book “With a Mouse on the River” the drawn map on the first page is enchanting: a river with lots of greenery and individual stations. A boathouse, a tunnel of leaves, a lock, an island. This makes you curious about the little mouse’s journey – and you can follow it in detail on the following 30 pages.

“With Mouse on the River” was published by Antje Kunstmann and costs 19 euros.

It starts early in the morning: The mouse boards a rowing boat to travel from her home in the forest to the sea. On the way she meets other animals, passes through a small town and spends the night on an island. The rhyming of the text is a bit awkward at times, but the wonderfully colorful illustrations make up for it. There is just so much to discover! And behind the many flaps there are other little stories hidden. Finally, there is a double page with factual information on the subject of rivers. A really nice book for children aged three and up.

“Pauline Pechfee” by Ursula Poznanski and Sabine Büchner

Pauline is excited: her training to become a lucky fairy begins! And she actually knows how it works: find people in need, let stardust fall – and everything turns out well. But that doesn’t work – on the contrary. Pauline’s stardust causes a woman to miss her bus, a small dog falls into a trash can, and a man breaks his arm. There can only be one reason: Pauline is not a lucky fairy at all, but rather a bad luck fairy. And she is extremely unhappy about that.

“Pauline Pechfee” was published by Loewe and costs 15 euros.

Ursula Poznanski is best known for her young adult thrillers, but she has also written several children’s books. “Pauline Pechfee” has a cool twist and is well suited for children aged four and over who can tolerate a little more text. But of course there are still many large-format illustrations on the 48 pages: Sabine Büchner has given the little fairy red curls and cool aviator sunglasses, and you can also discover many other details in the colorful images.

“101 monsters and everything you need to know about them!” by Ruby van der Borgen and Alexandra Helm

“101 monsters and everything you need to know about them!” was published by Oetinger and costs 15 euros.

After “101 Unicorns” and “101 Mermaids” the third volume of the funny hidden object book series. This time, illustrator Alexandra Helm has populated the double pages with monsters in all colors, sizes and shapes. Firstly, it becomes clear: all monsters are different. And secondly: They’re actually not scary at all, they’re actually pretty cute. And then the monster science can begin. What do monsters eat (things with M), where do they live (in caves), where do they sleep (all in one bed). You can endlessly look at the colorful, teeming double pages and find out more and more about monsters. For example, that they sometimes borrow a toy from the human children – but always bring it back. You know: that one car that you just can’t find – and at some point it’ll be back.

An imaginative picture book for children aged four and up that is also fun for parents. And after that, no one is afraid of monsters anymore.
