New Philips Hue Sync TV app for Samsung TVs

The new Philips Hue Sync app now allows you to control Philips Hue lighting products directly through your Samsung TV. The app is the result of a new collaboration between Samsung and Signify, the company behind Philips Hue lighting.

Ambilight is a well-known brand that most people associate with Philips TVs and will likely continue to be so in the future as well. But now it may be possible to achieve a similar effect with a new Samsung TV.

This is an incredible milestone in the Philips Hue home entertainment journey and in our ever-evolving partnership with Samsung. We are proud to deliver more immersive and personalized experiences with our new Philips Hue Sync TV app and we look forward to bringing this new way of enabling surround lighting to living rooms around the world,” said Jasper Vervoort, Head of Philips Hue at Meaning.

Philips currently sells a separate unit, HDMI sync box which allows you to synchronize the colors of your bulbs, light strips and Hue lamps with the action on your TV screen. But this was only able to be used with external video sources like Blu-ray, Playstation and the like.

With the TV’s built-in app functionality, you can also use the light effect with built-in apps like Netflix, Youtube, Disney+ and the like. In principle, the system should work with all types of content on the screen, including movies and games in 4K, 8K and HDR quality.

The new Philips Hue Sync TV app offers several dimming options: users can set how the light changes dynamically and quickly with the action, adjust the brightness of the lights, select video or game mode, etc. You can make further adjustments with the Philips Hue app and define which lights should be controlled by the TV, as well as where they are located in relation to the TV screen.

We are excited to bring the Philips Hue Sync TV app to Samsung TVs with Philips Hue,” said James Pi, Head of Experience Planning Group, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This innovative app offers our users a new way to experience TV content by immersing themselves in their favorite movie or game.It takes entertainment through our televisions to a whole new level.

Price and availability: Only for new Samsung TVs – and it costs money

The new app is called the Philips Hue Sync App and will be available for download on new Samsung TVs (model number Q60B and up) starting today, Thursday 5 January. However, the app won’t be free: it will actually cost 130 euros or around 1450 kroner. But at least it’s cheaper than a Sync Box.
