New Outbreaks of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Detected in South-West France

New cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (MHE) were detected in the South-West bringing the total number of outbreaks to 53 in France, assessed the Ministry of Agriculture as of October 5.

The restricted area now includes a fringe of Aveyron, Dordogne, Hérault in addition to Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Landes, Gers, Ariège, Tarn-et-Garonne and part of the departments of Gironde, Lot, Tarn, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales.

In this zone, including all municipalities located within a 150-kilometer radius around farms infected with the virus, animal movements are strictly regulated. Direct journeys to a slaughterhouse for slaughter within 24 hours nevertheless remain possible with a PCR laboratory screening test.

How to recognize the clinical signs of MHE?

Fever, oral lesionsweight loss and breathing difficulties are the main clinical signs of epizootic hemorrhagic disease. They are close to those of the bluetongue (FCO) which is also experiencing an increase in cases.
