Starting October 15, 2024, YouTube will open new possibilities for creating and monetizing short videos. Creators can then upload videos up to 3 minutes long in Shorts format – both square and vertical format, usable via the YouTube Studio app or desktop.
Important to note: Shorts uploaded before this date will remain unchanged and monetize continue to do so via Watch Page Ads, provided the creator is already part of the YouTube partner program. New videos in 1 to 3 minute format will soon also be monetized via Shorts Ads and will count towards the partner program qualification requirements.
It will take a few weeks until these longer shorts are visible on all YouTube surfaces, according to a message from YouTube to the Creators Community. This means that new videos may be delayed from appearing as shorts in the channel and being recorded in YouTube Analytics.
Special attention should be paid to the use of music and visually protected content in longer shorts. If copyrighted material is included, the video will be blocked. However, this does not result in any penalties, it says, and creators can remove the protected material to make the video accessible again.
