After “Blackkklansman” and “Tenet”, John David Washington (37) breaks more and more out of the shadow of his father Denzel. In “Beckett” he plays a tourist on the hit list.
Story: The US tourists Beckett (John David Washington) and April (Alicia Vikander, 32, “Tomb Raider”) explore the brittle mountains of Greece when a serious accident changes everything. Instead of helping the disturbed Beckett afterwards, the local police hunt him down – with their guns drawn! To find out what is going on, Beckett has to make his way to Athens …
Washington and Vikander captivate with their game as unsuspecting lovebirds. But what makes “Beckett” an outstanding thriller is the scarcely used landscape. Greece was so rarely the setting for such thrillers that new calamities could lurk behind every rock.
Vicki Krieps (37, “Old”) can be seen in a supporting role.
Director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino (37) has just opened the Locarno Film Festival with “Beckett”. His thriller seems to have fallen out of time in a positive sense. Such tricky cat-and-mouse games against a holiday backdrop are reminiscent of European crime novels from the 1960s and 1970s.
Conclusion: By a car accident in the middle of a government conspiracy. “Beckett” delivers high voltage free of charge and proves that big action cinema can also inspire with small explosions.
