As of today, “Brokeback Mountain” is new on Amazon Prime Video. The masterful love drama has many qualities, but especially the cowboy Heath Ledger, who died in 2008, stands out.
It might be a little unfair to single out a single actor when the cast, story and staging are as good as Brokeback Mountain, but this is about actor Heath Ledger. The Australian, who died in 2008 at the age of 28, had an engaging presence that was difficult to describe.
Heath Ledger had that certain something that makes the difference between a very good actor and a star in acting. In the love drama “Brokeback Mountain” he shines as a cowboy who speaks little and feels a lot.
Starting today, the three-time Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” can be streamed via Amazon Prime Video at no extra charge for all people with a subscription.

“Brokeback Mountain”: Two cowboys love each other
Heath Ledger plays the rancher Ennis del Mar, who met a rodeo rider named Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the 1960s. The two fall in love, which is a taboo at the time and especially in the rural US state of Wyoming.
Their relationship, which director Ang Lee tells over a plot period of 20 years, is not made difficult by the hostile attitude that gay people had to and must endure.

Ennis himself has great problems accepting his sexual orientation. He internalized the image of the unemotional, naturally heterosexual cowboy, as it has been drawn for decades in pop culture. And the way Heath Ledger expresses the inner struggle between inclination and norm in a few glances is nothing short of magnificent.
