New Offense Coaching Staff for the Berlin Rebels

Offense Coordinator 2022- Douglas Fryer:
The 35-year-old American has been on the road and known in football in Germany and Europe since 2009. He started his football career at college in Canada and was one of the 15 best wide receivers in the Canadian University League in 2007. So Fryer is at home in the offense. And that is exactly what brings him to 2009 for the first time
Germany, back then as a player.

His first stop is the Wernigerode Mountain Tigers in the Oberliga Ost. This is followed by seasons in Russia and Norway before returning to Germany in 2011. To a well-known team in Lower Saxony. The Braunschweig New York Lions (back then they weren’t called that yet) hire Fryer and he comes back to Germany as WR.

In 2012 he took over a coaching position for the first time and apparently does it pretty well, as he is head coach at the Paderborn Dolphins as early as 2018. In 2019 he will take over the Warsaw Mets as HC and will be signed by the Düsseldorf Panthers in GFL2 in 2020. Due to the season’s cancellation, it was postponed
Promotion by a year and he did exactly this with the team in the 2021 season. Douglas is coming to Berlin for the 2022 season and will take on the position of offense coordinator. So, together with his offense coaching staff, we start the new season.

QB/WR/SPT- Clifford Madison:
The Berlin Rebels without a Cliff? In principle unthinkable and that’s exactly why the coach from Los Angeles / CA and the Charlottenburg team continue to go together. In 1989 Cliff came to Germany as a quarterback for the Berlin Adlers and won several German championship titles. So he has one thing ahead of us.

Cliff finds his love and the center of his life in Berlin. So he came to stay. In 1996 the Rebels and Cliff try it together as quarterback for the first time. Not for long then. This is followed by seasons as a player with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and again with the Berlin Adlers. It was all a long time ago.

In 2000, Cliff ended his playing career and became a coach. That was now also obvious. He becomes OC with the Dresden Monarchs and a year later also their HC. With him, the monarchs succeed in what he does with the rebels 7 years later. The promotion to the GFL. This is followed by coaching engagements with the Hamburg Silver Eagles (HC / OC), Hanover
Musketeers (HC / OC), Carinthian Black Lions (OC) and again the Berlin Adler (OC / SPT). In 2009 he joined the Berlin Rebels as HC and joined the GFL with the team. In 2011 he quickly made the rise of the Neu Ruppin White Tigers perfect and in 2015 he finally came back to the Rebels to stay. In 2021 he was OC and will hand this office over to Douglas in 2022, because he simply wants to focus more on the special teams, the QB and the WR. We are very happy to continue having Cliff with us.

Offense Line Coach- Ken Jones:
The American will take over the tough guys from coach Yasin Issa. Yasin has to slow down for family reasons and will stay with the Rebels. Ken Jones is from Livingston / Alabama and will move to Berlin for his new job. Sooner or later it happens every time.

Jones gained his first experience as an Offense Coordinator and Offense Line Coach at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. There he is also active as a strength and conditioning coach. In 2005 he comes to Germany for the first time and becomes DC of the Hannover Musketeers. In 2008 I went back to America to Clarksville / TN to the Tri City Knights Semi-Professional Football Club as HC. This is followed by engagements at various high schools as a football coach until he moves to the University of Alabama as an Ass.OC in 2019. In 2022 Ken and his wife will embark on a new adventure and come to Berlin. We are more than excited to see how the orienteering will develop under Jones.

RB / Athletics Coach- Sascha Metzger:
Sascha comes from Marburg and in addition to a long history with the Marburg Mercenaries, Sascha is a trained teacher for fitness, health & sports rehabilitation and a certified personal trainer. He himself has been a player in the Mercenaries for 16 years and becomes German runner-up with the team in 2006 and wins the European Cup in Paris in 2007. In the same year he ends his playing career. But of course he won’t leave the mercenaries. He’s just not like that. We can already say that although we have only known Sascha for a few months. After leaving as an active player, he remains loyal to the team as a fitness and athletic trainer. Until 2021, he and his girlfriend will be on site as a sports therapist on match and training days and will therefore be part of the team’s medical staff.

In 2022 Sascha and his partner will also go to Berlin and through a mutual friend, the two will get together with the rebels. And what can we say it was kind of love at first sight. With his experience as a running back, Sascha was and is just as perfect for the vacancy as a running back coach. Sometimes it’s just a lucky coincidence. We are very much looking forward to the season with Sascha and Krissy (whom we will introduce to you later)
To go in 2022. We’re looking forward to the 2022 season. 35 years of Berlin Rebels, new coaches, new players and lots of changes.
