A Chinese Navy nuclear submarine sank at a shipyard near Wuhan earlier this year, reports said The Wall Street Journal based on US government sources. Also other media report on the news based on American sources.
According to reports, it is a new type of submarine that was still under construction. It is believed that the ship sank sometime between May and mid-June. It is not known if nuclear fuel was already on board. It is also unclear what caused the submarine to sink.
On satellite images from the CNN news channel publishedthe submarine can be seen still attached to a pontoon in the Yangtze River on March 10. The ship is no longer visible in the photo from mid-June (see above). However, there are several crane vessels at the same location, which, according to American officials, can be used to recover the submarine. The water also has pipes that stop oil leaking.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is not aware of a submarine sinking.
