The NBA continues with its process of important changes and moved forward with a new rule that had the competition for the stars’ rest in the Regular Season in suspense. The NBA managers approved regulations to avoid “load management”which is related to television games in the United States and the unjustified rest of franchise players.
The most exciting basketball tournament in the world has coexisted, in recent years, with a problem that has become increasingly bigger. Each season, the statistics showed that the most decisive basketball players with higher contracts missed an important part of the Regular Phase without having injuries or solid arguments. Faced with the problem, the governors met for several weeks and The Competition Committee approved a program to end this custom.
The new rules promoted by the NBA to avoid “load management”
The NBA reported on its official website the new regulations whose main function is to sanction those franchises that decide to give unjustified rest to the best players in nationally televised matches. In addition, the league clarified that the basketball player who enters that category corresponds to “someone who has made the All-Star or All-NBA team in any of the last three seasons”.
Teams must manage their rosters to ensure that no more than one star is out for a single game. Teams must ensure stars are available for national television games and NBA Tournament games. Maintain a balance between the stars’ rest games at home and away. Avoid ending a star player’s season early. If a player is off, make sure he is in the stadium, visible to fans.
As reported by ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA will take into account some exceptions in the new regulationsespecially for players considered veterans who cannot maintain the intense pace of the competition.
“$100,000 for the first violation, $250,000 for the second violation, and $1 million more than the previous penalty for each additional fine,” Wojnarowski reported on his Twitter account. And then he added: “The NBA will provide pre-approved permits for players who are at least 35 years old and for those who accumulate 34,000 minutes of the Regular Phase or 1,000 combined games between the Regular Phase and the Playoffs.”
Although some players and coaches expressed their disagreement with the measures, the teams will have meetings weeks before the start of the new season to internalize themselves and not fall into any infractions. Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, celebrated the new rule since audience numbers had fallen noticeably when franchises decided to rest the best players in the competition.
