A new multidisciplinary consultation center for infectious diseases was opened at the UMC Sint-Pieter on Thursday morning, which will actually receive patients from October 16.
The MIA center is the new space for consultations regarding, among other things, general infectious diseases, screening and treatment of STDs, treatment and follow-up of HIV and the follow-up of complex tuberculosis. Spread over about thirty rooms, patients can consult doctors specialized in infectious diseases, specialized nurses and consultants from other related specializations.
“It was obvious to bring together the resources and expertise of the different clinics of the department (Cetim, S Clinic, Elisa center) in the same space, in order to achieve a more coherent patient care and to make it easier for patients,” the hospital reported on Thursday. Before their merger, these three centers provided 21,500 consultations annually.
The MIA center, which will treat all specializations in the field of infectious diseases with the exception of travel medicine (which will remain in the Travel and Vaccine Clinic on the Alexiens site), is located on the Halle Gate site, and in particular in the courtyard of the hospital, where the Cetim used to be housed.
According to Philippe Leroy, director general of the UMC Sint-Pieter, the project cost 2.5 million euros, half of which came from the hospital’s own resources and the other half from donations and sponsorship.
