New MotoGP Rules: Qualifying Changes and Implications for Racers

TRIBUNJOGJA.COM – MotoGP will apply new rules when the Series 9 race begins at the British Silvestone Circuit.

Starting at the British MotoGP, the new rules issued by the Grand Prix Commission will be applied.

The gist of the new MotoGP rules reads more or less that only the time record during the second practice session (P2) on Friday afternoon local time determines the qualification for qualifying 2 (Q2).

The new MotoGP rules were announced in relation to the race weekend format.

Currently, MotoGP 2023 is about to enter its second half and will start with series 9 at England’s Silverstone Circuit.

The Grand Prix Commission, which announced the new rules, contains Dorna Sports as the promoter of MotoGP, FIM (International Motor Federation), IRTA (Team Association), and MSMA (Manufacturers Association) on Monday (17/7/2023).

Reason for changing the rules

It is stated in the new rules that will begin to be implemented at the British MotoGP, that only the P2 time record on Friday afternoon local time will determine the qualification of riders to Q2.

So far, racers have had to compete to catch the best lap times in the first two practice sessions in order to compete for the top 10 places in the combined results, reports bolasport.

This is very crucial because it is risking a ticket to qualify directly for qualification 2 which determines the owner of the front start position, aka pole position.

Mentioned, the starting position is increasingly important in MotoGP races because the chances of overtaking are smaller.

Technology that makes it easier for drivers to take risks and is prone to overheating of the front tires when driving behind rivals is the cause.

The racers finally didn’t get enough chance to breathe because they had to go all out from the start.

With a session duration of 45 minutes in the first practice, racers usually only have 30 minutes to find a setup before starting to compete in time attacks.
