(Elbil24): Volvo is in the shot like never before, and recently reported that they have just had the best sales result of all time for the first half. The brand has always wanted to be seen as a premium car brand, which is reflected in the prices. Of pure electric cars, they currently only have the four-wheel drive XC40 to offer. This is a car that starts at 524,900 kroner, which will soon change.

Because with the XC40, Volvo started a so-called “top-down”, meaning that they launched the most advanced and expensive model first, and then built up the volume by launching cheaper models over time.

During the autumn, they will also put into production a pure front-wheel drive model that with its one engine gets a performance of 231 horsepower, compared to today’s four-wheel drive version that offers 408 horsepower. The front-wheel drive version gets a battery of 69 kWh, and should have a range of around 40 miles. In practice, this will be a car that is located somewhere between VW ID.3 and ID.4 in shape and size, but still offers good ground clearance.

Volvo is far from the fastest when it comes to fast charging, but states that it should take around 32 minutes to charge from 10 – 80 percent, an information that means little without taking also states the amount of energy this amounts to.

During the XC40’s relatively short life, changes have been made through software and other things. The new edition will of course have all this from the start.

As I said, Polestar has already made these moves for its Polestar 2. Polestar has also had a period where they have been a notch below Volvo in price. Unfortunately, the Norwegian prices for the two-wheel drive version will only be known a little closer to launch in this country, which is a little later in the autumn.

If you do not want to buy or commit to a car on a permanent basis, this will also be available through the Care by Volvo system, where you sign up for a kind of long-term subscription and pay a monthly price to have the car, with the option to jump off at short notice.

If we are going to bet on a price, we assume we will be able to see a reduction similar to what we saw when Polestar came with its two-wheel drive version. The front-wheel drive version of the XC40 has only been communicated on the Swedish market so far.

As is well known, Volvo has also shown us pictures of their new C40, a coupe version of the XC40. This can apparently be obtained with optional two- or four-wheel drive from the start.

Next year will also see the fully electric version of the XC90, a brand new car from the company. Recently, they also unveiled the Concept Recharge, a car that shows the design direction for the cars of the future from Volvo, and it should not be swept under the rug that Volvo is in a good steam.

They are out early with the electrification, and a report presented by Transport & Environment in late June gave clear indications that Volvo, together with Volkwagen, is at the forefront with a view to being ready for the fully electric future.

Then it remains to be seen whether the country where everyone seems to want four-wheel drive – Norway – is ripe for a front-wheel drive fully electric Volvo XC40, or perhaps a C40. We will update as soon as the prices become known.
