Mass Effect has built one of the best worlds of any RPG. Even with the Reaper invasion looming, it still seems like it would be fun to live in this version of the Milky Way. One of the coolest BioWare background elements included in the series was the Cerberus Daily News, a small ticker on the Mass Effect 2 home screen that provided short news updates on events in the galaxy. Now modder Cirosan moved these stories in the Legendary Edition.
Mass Effect 2’s main menu was updated with a new story every day from January 26, 2010 to January 24, 2011 with short revivals later in 2011 and 2012 to promote DLC for ME2 and eventually Mass Effect 3. Some of of these stories foreshadowed the later events of the main Mass Effect storyline, while others merely added to the length of the story.
For example, there was a series of updates about an artificial intelligence ghost ship found in deep space. In subsequent stories, the news revealed that it was actually the home of a virtual civilization that had digitized its consciousness to avoid a dying star, and the series culminated in their attempts to integrate into the wider galactic society. Just a great little sci-fi story that you can look forward to in the main menu of your favorite RPG.
Until now, you’ve only been able to find news updates saved on the Mass Effect Wiki, but the Cirosan mod re-includes them in Mass Effect 2 as new in-game emails on your personal computer on the Normandy. Cirosan has tried to distribute them in a satisfying way: the mod sends you a new CDN history upon completion of each mission. However, Cirosan notes that the sheer number of CDN updates outnumbers the number of missions in the game, so he decided to include some and remove others on his own, instead of spamming Shepard’s inbox.
