In Lithuania, the second of the three new military campuses was officially opened on Monday in Rokantiškii, Vilnius district.
The military town built in three years in a public-private partnership will be the base of Kunigaiš Vaidot’s mechanized rifle battalion.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvīds Anušauskas said that the new combat battalion base will strengthen the defense of Vilnius, as until now there were only military command units in the capital of Lithuania.
“The combat battalion is now based right here, and our ability to defend the capital with all our forces in crisis situations has significantly changed for the better,” the minister said when opening the new military campus.
The commander of the Lithuanian army, General Valdemārs Rupšis, also emphasized the importance of the Rokantiškiu base, as it is the first time that a maneuver unit has been deployed so close to the capital.
“This is consistent with our overall ideas as outlined in our defense plans,” he said.
The Rokantiški base has administrative and special purpose buildings, such as barracks, canteen, headquarters, medical center, chapel, sports infrastructure and fields, as well as technical buildings and other necessary infrastructure.
It has already been announced that in the west of Lithuania, in Pajure, Šilale district, a newly built military town was opened last week, where the Artillery Battalion of Brigadier General Motiejus Pechulionis is based.
In the spring, it is planned to hand over the third new military town, located in Šiauliai, to the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
All three military campuses are intended for a battalion-sized unit. It is the largest military infrastructure project in Lithuania, after the completion of which there will be a place for up to 2,500 military personnel and civilian employees of the defense system.
The strategic project of the Ministry of Defense envisages the construction of three military campuses in order to strengthen Lithuania’s combat capabilities, provide physical infrastructure for the permanent deployment of the combat capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and strengthen national defense and control.
The construction of three military campuses in Lithuania cost 231 million euros. Lithuania will repay the construction within 12 years, paying an average of six million euros per year for each military campus.
