NEW YORK — A Brooklyn cruise ship terminal will be converted into a temporary shelter for migrants being sent to New York City from the border.

Mayor Eric Adams has said that without federal help, the American dream of asylum-seeking immigrants will become a real nightmare.

The new shelter and humanitarian assistance center is the fifth that the city has opened since May, but there are some of them that have already been closed.

At the shelter, one thousand single male asylum seekers will be given food, lodging and medical attention. Its first occupants will move from another help center of a hotel that will then go on to house asylum-seeking families but with children.

Community and religious leaders gathered at City Hall Square Saturday, joining Mayor Eric Adams to plead for immediate federal help.

Adams said that lawmakers in Washington, DC must act now to address the crisis and thanked the New York congressmen who have managed $8 million from FEMA.

The number of asylum-seeking migrants who have arrived since last May exceeds 41,000, according to official figures. Some 28,000 of them are in the city in assistance centers.

Once the humanitarian assistance and relief center at the cruise terminal in the Brooklyn harbor is ready, it will be able to accommodate 1,000 male asylum seekers. Currently, the city has not given a specific date for its opening.
