For many, the Mercedes E-Class has been synonymous with a taxi. Preferably a little run down and ragged. There is very little reminiscent of this in the new electric E-Class, which is on display at the large car show in Munich that opens today. In addition to the range as a petrol car, it gets many exciting technical details and a lot of equipment that is taken directly from the luxurious S-Class.
Now comes the retro electric cars
It is not more than a year and a half since Mercedes EQC came into Norwegian stores as the factory’s first modern electric car. After that, both the compact SUV EQA and the flagship EQS were launched. Now the trip has come to the electric version of the popular E-Class.
– One in ten Mercedes customers already chooses one of our electrical alternatives. I am sure that the new EQE will make many more people choose a pure electric car, said Mercedes boss Ola Kallenius, when he showed the car.
Lots of space
The car will come in two versions, including a 288 horsepower EQE 350. We do not yet know details about the other model. According to Kallenius, the EQE is longer than a regular E-Class, and has an unusually large space inside, since it is built from scratch as a pure electric car. It does not have a traditional gearbox, exhaust system, large internal combustion engine and so on, which frees up a lot of space.
The most satisfied electric car owners
There is no doubt that the range of 660 kilometers after the WLTP test cycle helps to make this an exciting competitor to the Tesla Model S. It also sets a new standard for range in the competition against the Audi electric A6 and BMW’s electric 5- series to be launched in 2022
Separate passenger screen
Of exciting equipment, we can mention that EQE gets the opportunity for wireless upgrades from the factory. It also means the ability to activate a special driving mode for young drivers. In short, it means limiting horsepower and speed.
As an option, you will be able to get Hyperscreen – the large glass dashboard that extends the entire width of the car – where you will find a new intelligent navigation system. The front passenger has its own screen that can view a video or movie while driving. A camera monitors the driver and detects if he or she is trying to look at the passenger’s display. Then the movie stops automatically so as not to distract the driver.
These 20 electric cars go the furthest
Coming to summer
EQE has a number of advanced safety systems to prevent you from getting into dangerous situations. What Mercedes calls a new “microsleep system”, consists of a camera that monitors your eyelids, analyzes the movements and alerts if it thinks you are about to fall asleep behind the wheel.
Production of the EQE will start in Germany next year, and the first cars are scheduled to arrive in Norway next summer. It is currently too early to say anything about what the car will cost, but big brother EQS starts at around 950,000 kroner and the SUV EQC at around 640,000 kroner. The price also depends a lot on the price Audi and BMW put on their new electric cars.
