After infection, people with vulnerable health may be able to receive a medicine that prevents serious illness caused by corona. The drug bemnifosbuvir has not yet been approved, but has passed the first test phase well. Research is now taking place into the safety and effectiveness of the drug, in which thousands of people are participating. NU.nl reports this.
The medicine can prevent the risk of serious illness from corona in the elderly, people with an organ transplant, Parkinson’s, Down syndrome, HIV, diabetes or cancer. This means that the chance that they will end up in intensive care or die is much smaller. Bemnifosbuvir is easier to combine with other medications than existing drugs and is therefore hopeful for vulnerable people who are already taking the medication.
Phase 3
The first two phases have now been completed. The European Medicines Agency and the FDA in the United States have now approved phase 3, in which the drug will be tested in thousands of people. In phase 3, the safety and effectiveness of the drug is central. “Everything that comes in phase 3 has potential,” says research leader Marc Bonten of UMC Utrecht. “And if it passes phase 3 well, it is a safe and good medicine.” But to determine this, complete research into the drug is required. Nevertheless, the first results are promising.
Coronavirus remains
It may take months or even years before bemnifosbuvir reaches the market. But the coronavirus will remain and therefore remains a risk for people with vulnerable health.
