“We need the community’s help to keep measles contained,” said Dr. Nick Staab, MCDPH deputy medical director. “Widespread vaccination with a safe and highly effective measles vaccine is our best chance to prevent measles from returning to what it was before the vaccine existed.”
According to the CDC, between 3 and 4 million people were infected with measles each year in the United States before a vaccine was available. Between 400 and 500 people die each year from measles, and almost 50,000 are hospitalized each year for serious infections.
The measles virus can survive in the air for several hours and can be transmitted to people even if you have left the room. However, the measles vaccine is safe, and two doses provide about 97% protection, according to the CDC.
Measles usually appears as a rash 3 to 5 days later. And it begins with a high fever, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. The rash usually starts on the forehead and spreads to other parts of the body.
Symptoms compatible with measles include:
- White spots in the throat.
This is a developing story. Please check back later for updates.
