New Mazda CX-80 SUV Takes European Market by Storm with Versatility and Performance

Mazda recently unveiled its new flagship, the CX-80. Its body is designed for easy maneuverability in everyday driving and parking situations, but with three rows of seats, it provides additional flexibility for larger families.

“The all-new flagship model was created to challenge the leading brands established in the European market. After the CX-60, the CX-80 is the second of two new models for Europe from the company’s large product group. Comfortable, versatile and made in Japan, it is currently the most comprehensive car in Mazda’s European model range,” says Lauri Rinnettmeki, Mazda Finland and Baltic Business Development Manager.

The largest in the range of models

The CX-80’s expressive ‘front’ and long, elegant front highlight the ‘engine in front, drive in the back’ architecture of the new SUV, while the dynamic and impressive radiator grille and lights make it clear immediately that it is Mazda’s new main site. .

Like the CX-60, the CX-80 has a wide front panel and side vents that blend visually with the doors. All this together strengthens the idea of the width and space of the cabin. The large console extends longitudinally through the cabin, both confirming the solidity of the structure and concealing the powertrain located below with automatic transmission. eight-speed and the engine is located far in front.

The all-new Mazda CX-80 is designed with easy daily commuting and parking in mind, yet it’s large enough to seat seven passengers comfortably. CX-80 length is 4995 mm, width – 1890 mm, height – 1710 mm, and wheelbase – 3120 mm. The new flagship is 250 mm longer and 24 mm higher than the CX-60, has a 250 mm longer wheelbase and a turning radius of 5.8 metres.

With the third row of seats up, luggage compartment capacity, including underfloor storage, is 258 litres. It increases to 687 liters if the third row is folded, and to 1221 liters if the backrests of the second row are also folded down. On the other hand, counting the room up to the roof, the volume reaches 1971 liters. Optionally, the all-new Mazda CX-80 can be equipped with an electric tailgate that works in hands-free mode.

The Mazda CX-80 driver personalization system, which was first installed on the CX-60 model, includes three functions: automatic seat position adjustment, automatic reset and assistant entry/exit.

The automatic seat position assistant uses a camera to determine the driver’s eye height and height, assess their body structure, and then automatically adjust the seat, steering wheel , active driving display (projection display) and exterior mirrors to match the driver’s viewing angle.

Automatic settings reset uses facial recognition and data about various settings stored in the car, and resets each automatically when the driver enters the car. The system is able to save settings for six riders, as well as additional users of the car.

Better field of view

As in the CX-60, there are three main displays in the driver’s area: a TFT-LCD instrument panel, a central 12.3-inch infotainment display and a large projection screen. It reduces the need to take your eyes off the road, provides essential information in a way that is easy to understand and enhances the feeling of safety while driving.

The CX-80 is equipped with Mazda’s 360 ° view monitor, supported by See-through View technology. It makes it easy to travel on city streets and tight spaces, even in a car as big as the CX-80. See-through View displays a large image of the area in front of and around the wheels on the central display, allowing the driver to see if there are dangerous obstacles nearby.

All three rows of CX-80 seats are equipped with USB-C ports. All versions of the CX-80 feature a 15W wireless charger in the center console and a 150W power source at the back of the console. In addition, e-Skyactiv PHEV models can be equipped with a 1500 W AC source. The battery’s electricity can be used for a variety of purposes – even powering powerful electrical appliances – and don’t worry about the remaining reserve.

Extensive standard equipment includes 8-way adjustable driver’s seat and 6-way adjustable front passenger seat, heated steering wheel and front seats, tri-zone air conditioning, 12.3 color TFT touch screen -inch and HMI Command controller, Alexa voice control, DAB radio with 8 speakers, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connection, hybrid navigation, projection display and cruise control.

Additional packages include black leather seats, 10-way power front seats, front seat ventilation, second row seat heating, adaptive LED headlights, Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), etc.

Electric power units

The range of Mazda CX-80 power units consists of two engines. The first is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder e-Skyactiv G gasoline engine with electrification technology. The second is the e-Skyactiv D-row 3.3-lite six-cylinder diesel engine with M Hybrid Boost, or the Mazda 48 V mild hybrid system.

Both power units are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda i-Activ all-wheel drive system. Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) offers four drive modes (plus an EV mode for the PHEV version).

The Mazda PHEV powertrain combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5 four-cylinder gasoline engine with a large 129 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The maximum power of the petrol engine is 141 kW at 6000 rpm and the maximum torque is 261 Nm. The electric motor develops a power of 129 kW and a torque of 270 Nm. This combination of motor and electric motor provides a total output of 327 hp / 241 kW and a generous torque of 500 Nm. Mazda CX-80 e-Skyactiv PHEV accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds.

PHEVs, when operating with electric drive support, exhibit excellent environmental performance. WLTP fuel consumption in the combined cycle is just 2.0 l / 100 km, and the PHEV offers a range of 53 km in pure electric mode.

The 3,283cc direct injection six-cylinder 254hp e-Skyactiv D unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. With the M Hybrid Boost system or Mazda 48V mild hybrid, the diesel engine combines great power and excellent fuel economy.

These two technologies ensure the CX-80’s excellent autonomy, powerful driving, low fuel consumption and low emissions. With the e-Skyactiv D engine, the CX-80 reaches 0-100 km/h in just 8.4 seconds, the top speed is 219 km/h, and the average fuel consumption according to WLTP is only 5.7 l / 100 km.

The all-new Mazda CX-80 has a towing capacity of 2,500 kg.

Focus on maximum safety

The CX-80 uses all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch and torque redistribution in favor of the rear wheels, first introduced in the CX-60. In versions with electrification, the four-wheel drive works together with the service brakes thus optimizing the recovery distribution between the front and rear wheels.

The wide range of advanced i-Activsense driver assistance systems offer the highest level of active safety and aim to achieve a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The CX-80 will feature the following new safety features: Cruise and Traffic Assist (CTS) with the new Driver Alert Monitoring System; intelligent braking support (SBS) with the new front suspension and mitigation system; emergency lane keeping (ELK) system with the new collision prevention assistant.

Cruise and Traffic Assist (CTS) helps the driver to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles while helping to stay in the center of the lane. If the collision avoidance system detects a risk of a frontal collision, the driver receives a visual and audible warning. If an accident is imminent, brake control kicks in to reduce the consequences.

The new car can already be ordered from the official Mazda representative in Latvia. CX-80 prices start from 53,900 euros.
