New Mayor Rio puts a stop to controversial F1 circuit in Deodoro

The new mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, has put an end to the plan to build a new Formula 1 circuit in the Deodoro district. It is still open for a circuit at another location.

Last month, Paes took over the duties as mayor from Marcello Crivella. He immediately made his voice heard and made an important decision. There were plans to build a new Formula 1 circuit in the Deodoro district. It was a controversial plan, because a lot of forest would have to be cut down for it. Many people were not happy about this, because such nature has already become quite scarce. In addition, they were also suspected of fraud surrounding the project. All in all, not very positive, and that is why Paes has decided to abandon the new circuit altogether, reports the Brazilian Globe Sports.

At the end of last year, Chase Carey already indicated to the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro that Formula 1 would like to move to Rio in the long run. Currently, the premier class travels annually to the beloved circuit at Interlagos in São Paulo and will certainly remain so in the coming years. In December of 2020, a five-year deal was signed.

Paes would very much like to move Formula 1 to Rio. He would prefer to have a new circuit built in a sparsely populated area such as Guaratiba. This is located in the west of the country and offers new options. However, it does not look like this can be realized quickly at the moment, so the question is whether it is worth building a new circuit, while Interlagos is so popular.
