Marvel movie may go Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings the lowest opening weekend for the MCU since The Incredible Hulk.
The film is the first solo film for a new hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since we released in 2019 Captain Marvel could see. Fans are of course very much looking forward to the film, but the box office does not seem to be anything to write home about.
A disappointment
The release of Shang-Chi will soon take place exclusively in cinemas. That in contrast to Black Widow, which was shown both in theaters and via VIP access on Disney+. Shang-Chi is in theaters and 45 days later on the streaming service.
That move was described by Disney boss Bob Chapek as an experiment to see how comfortable the audience feels. It also looks at how a Marvel film can currently perform if it comes out exclusively in cinemas.
It looks like this is going to be a big blow to the Marvel movie. Boxoffice Pro writes that the long-term tracking of the opening weekend yields a range of between $35 million and $55 million. If the highest prediction comes true, the movie will do about as ‘good’ as The Incredible Hulk, which debuted in 2008 with $55.4 million. A disappointment, because Black Widow opened with a revenue of $80 million.
Actor Simu Liu is not happy with it and clearly states that as far as he is concerned it will be a mega hit. Moreover, he does not like the fact that Disney boss Bob Chapek called the release of the film in the cinema an experiment.
We are not an experiment.
We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year.
We are the surprise.
