New Marnix Singelgracht Underground Garage Opens in Amsterdam Center – West

From Tuesday February 27, visitors can park their car in the underground Singelgracht garage – Marnix. Construction took almost 3.5 years in total. The municipality has announced that parking is only possible on floor -2 for the time being.

The opening of the garage under the Singelgracht and on the border of Center and West was planned for the beginning of this year, but there was no definitive date yet.

The municipality is receiving increasing signals of traffic nuisance from cars looking for a parking space from the Frederik Hendrikbuurt, Nassaukade and the Jordaan. That is why the -2 floor of the Marnix garage is already open to permit holders and visitors. A total of 400 cars can park here. The entire garage can accommodate 800 cars.

Visitors with a parking permit from parts of the Frederik Hendrikbuurt and the Jordaan can park their vehicle in Marnix at no additional cost. Other visitors pay 0.65 euros per 6 minutes, with a maximum of 65.00 euros per day. The garage has 80 electric charging places, 8 parking spaces for the disabled, is wheelchair accessible and is open 24/7.

Paintings

The fact that the garage opens next Tuesday does not mean that all work is over. The municipality has announced that work will be carried out in and around the garage. “It may therefore be that not everything is working as you would like. The -1 floor will remain closed for the time being. This way the contractor can work on the last remaining points,” the municipality said.

The garage has five pedestrian entrances. There are also two glass entrance houses, one on the Marnixkade and one on the Nassaukade. A total of 16 murals have been painted on the walls in the pedestrian entrances, paintings by artist Dewy Elsinga.

“In these colorful works she depicts what, according to residents, makes the neighborhoods around the Marnix parking garage special. Their stories, drawings and other input are bundled into 5 themes: flora and fauna, sports and games, works of art in the area, local entrepreneurs and striking places “, writes the municipality.

Refurbishment

The water on the roof of the Marnix disappeared during construction, but returned in October last year. The municipality has started creating moorings for the boats in this area. In the near future, the berths will be furnished and the utilities will be installed. Then the boats return.

Last January, a redesign of the street at the Frederik Hendrikplantsoen in West took place. From then on, the section was only used for users of the Singelgracht garage. Turning right from the Nassaukade to the Frederik Hendrikplantsoen was no longer allowed. This often went wrong for several then ignorant motorists.
