New MacOS allows you to use Iphone as a webcam

Apple launched a series of news at the WWDC developer conference on Monday. Among other things, they showed off next version of iOS and nye MacBook Air. The new MacBook will also come with new software. MacOS Ventura is the next version of MacOS, which will also come to most Apple computers launched after 2017.

The biggest updates to the new version of MacOS are about syncing with other Apple devices. FaceTime Handoff is one of these. Apple now lets you switch devices during a Facetime video call. If you are on your mobile, a pop-up will appear on your Mac or iPad that allows you to transfer the call to a new device. This allows you to continue the conversation when you get to your Mac without having to sit with your phone in your hand, or you can take the conversation away from your Mac.

Use your mobile phone as a webcam

Digi has previously written about how one can use other cameras like webcam for better quality on the video calls. Now Apple is coming up with its own solution. Continuity Camera allows you to use Iphone as a webcam on Mac. This will not only improve the camera quality of the webcam, it will also provide new software features to the webcam on all Apple computers. Center Stage is one of the features added to Continuity Camera. The camera recognizes those in the picture and follows you. Image processing we know from Iphone’s portrait mode will now also be available if you choose to use Iphone as a webcam. The background can be blurred, as most video conferencing apps already have, but also Studiolight, which uses software to adjust the light so that it looks like you are lit up by studio lights, can be useful in dark environments.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is one that not everyone will use. Deskview uses the wide-angle camera along with software to give you a camera angle that gives the impression that you have a camera over your desk. This allows you to display things on the desk in video calls. Useful for those who work with physical products. Apple is partnering with Belkin to create parties that let you hang your phone on your screen.

New way to sort windows

In addition to camera and Facetime updates, there were also updates for window sorts on Mac. Stage Manager is a feature where Apple puts all the windows on the side of the screen instead of overlapping. It gives a fairly simple look.

The function also comes to IpadOS, which is probably somewhat better suited for this than Mac. Apple also introduced a password-free solution, which they call Passkey. The solution saves the login locally on the Apple device and secures it with Apple’s biometric solution. They also allow you to sign in with Passkey from devices not made by Apple, but you need to verify using an Iphone. The solution has been developed together with the FIDO alliance, which presented a report earlier this year where they said they had found the solution to a password-free everyday life.
